Vyborg is situated on the coast of the Gulf of Finland, 120 km North-West of St. Petersburg. Vyborg is known as one of the oldest historical sites in Russia. The history of the town began with the construction of the castle in 1293 by swedish vikings when they conquered the Carelia Isthmus. Vyborg was granted official status of a town in 1403.

Today Vyborg is a cultural and tourist center, international harbor, and the crossroad of important railways and highways. The A10 Helsinki - Moscow highway passes through the city. The historical core of the town is formed by the castle and adjacent buildings.
